The Digital Media Centre brings together the essential components of digital media research and development in a cohesive and integrated fashion, drawing upon recognised multi-disciplinary expertise.

DMC Objectives

  • increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the creation and deployment of digital media
  • effectively develop and deliver content via a myriad of access technologies and devices
  • develop digital media content of the highest artistic merit; educational effectiveness and that is conducive to user interaction
  • improve learning outcomes using digital media technologies
  • facilitate professional and postgraduate education and training programs relevant to digital media industry
  • contribute to the formation of collaborative national and international links with other R&D institutions.

Expertise

The Digital Media Centre contributors are internationally recognised leaders in educational technology, creative arts and information technology and telecommunications.

Education and Training

Research and development in technology-based, learning environments have won team members the highest acclaim. Program contributors have produced projects which are internationally recognised for excellence in all sectors of education and training. Some recent projects include: Exploring the Nardoo with a science and environmental focus; performing arts was highlighted in StageStruck while aspire was produced for the 2000 Sydney Olympic games. Currently the team is developing simulation training for the Australian and Singapore Defence forces. The group holds an international research reputation in the use of cognitive tools to support learning in technology-based environments and effective facilitation of on-line and Web-based learning.

Telecommunications

Contributing researchers have established a highly regarded national and international research and development reputation in telecommunications. The research agenda focuses on investigations into the design and performance of advanced telecommunications network technologies. Its activites include network design for new network technologies and architectures such as ATM and Broadband-ISDN, Wireless Systems and Intelligent Networks.

Creative Arts

The group has considerable experience in facilitating innovative creative arts research and investigating new modes of artistic production and dissemination. Of particular importance to the membership is the concept of multidisciplinary collaborative engagement. The recently launched Film Illawarra initiative facilitates the motion picture film production in the Wollongong region.

Project-based Focus

The Digital Media Centre is focused on forming industry partnerships, based on large-scale projects, which take advantage of this unique expertise available within the Centre. The projects advance the use and application of digital media, generating new research and development opportunities in a structure not previously attempted.
